Summerlin Master Planned Community
Developed in 1989 by the Howard Hughes Corporation, Summerlin is a master-planned community in the Las Vegas Valley of Southern Nevada and is home to 22 (and growing) villages. Summerlin is unfolding on 35 square miles of desert land acquired by Howard Hughes in the 1950s and began development in the late 1980s, since then the community has become home to nearly 100,000 people.
Nearly 30 percent of the community’s total acreage has been designated as community space that includes passive and active open areas, recreational facilities, the Summerlin Trail System, golf courses, natural preserved areas and landscaped areas. Approximately 18 percent of the community’s total acreage is designated as irrigated open space, including trails, parks and golf courses.
Approximately 15 percent of the community’s total acreage is dedicated to the preservation of natural areas such as arroyos, washes and desert canyons. Some of these areas may be owned by others, such as the Bureau of Land Management.
